Glaze Hydrometer
Glaze Hydrometer
Description
Baumé Glaze Hydrometer
A glaze hydrometer (thickness tester) measures the specific gravity of a glaze, to help standardize the thickness of a glaze from one batch to the next. If you mix your own glazes from recipes or purchased powder, hydrometers can save a lot of misery from glazes too thick or thin.
- Glass casing with weighted bulb
- Baumé 15c scale reading
- Approx. 125mm long
- The Hydrometer is a useful tool in achieving the ideal consistency of glaze and slip.
- Invaluable to enable easy repetition of optimum glaze consistency from one batch to another.
- To use, wet the hydrometer and gently place, bulb end first, in to the glaze slop or clay slip where it will float like a fishing float and the scale can be read.
Approximate Ranges (for guidance only):
- Dipping or pouring colour glaze: 55 (specific gravity ~1.61)
- Dipping or pouring clear glaze: 46-47 (specific gravity ~1.46 to 1.48)
- Spraying glazes: 60 (specific gravity ~1.71)
- Brushing glazes: 60-65 (specific gravity ~1.71 to 1.81)

"Absolute game changer!! I have been struggling for ages to get the right consistency for dipping glaze, particularly clear. The hydrometer has made a huge difference. No more guesswork!"

"Wouldn’t be without this - essential to ensure each new batch of glaze is the same as the last. Really promptly delivered too."
